Permanent and Impermanent Memories Part 1 Project 2024 Caroline Richardson RIBA Studio | UK This project explores the interplay of permanence and impermanence, focusing on how humans, though temporary, leave lasting legacies like buildings and traditions. It reflects on ancestral impacts on the land and aims to address modern environmental issues by fostering a harmonious relationship with nature.Inspired by Cornwall’s history, particularly the cessation of mining in the 20th century, the design integrates elements from Cornish mining, echoing the underground journeys of miners and the physical characteristics of the site. The design concept revolves around the balance of permanence and impermanence, shaping both tangible and metaphorical aspects.The project also addresses contemporary societal challenges related to mortality. In the UK, limited burial space and unsustainable cremation practices prompt a reimagining of death rituals. Cultural diversity, technological advances, and climate change call for sustainable solutions.
