The Scent Repository: Performative Functionality Part 2 Project 2019 Alexandra Sims Cardiff University | UK This thesis project is concerned with investigating the idea of performative functionality and aims to achieve a truthful and engaging architecture through eliciting how a building and its components actually operate; knowledge which has become almost redundant in the existing technological age. The focus stems from early explorations of craft. Firstly, from an investigation into watchmaking and its componentry, and then subsequently from experimenting with kinetics, mechanics, gears and automata. The thesis manifested itself in the form of a perfume archive or ‘Scent Repository’ set in Kew Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The proposal utilises kinetics and mechanics to unveil the perfume-making process to the user within the environment of a truthful and theatrical architecture. Alexandra Sims Tutor(s)
