Frameworks of Repair: A new order for reframing art and architecture at the British Museum

Part 1 Project 2025

‘Frameworks of Repair’ proposes making the processes of conservation— both architectural renovation and artefact restoration — visible and integral to the visitor experience at the British Museum. The challenge in repairing the museum lies in balancing the need for major construction works with the preservation of its historic structure and keeping the museum open to the public. My position is rooted in the ethical principles of avoiding demolition and revealing processes of care. Instead of hiding conservation and restoration, they are displayed as part of the museum’s exhibition. The project proposes a new architectural order for conservation through a proposed framework system, which can adapt to the museum’s many conditions and support ongoing architectural, and conservation works.

The British Museum's building is outdated and in disrepair. Persistent issues like leaking roofs and structural damage demand ongoing maintenance. Visitors become active witnesses to these changes, seeing broken elements removed, new ones installed, and a proposed golden framework, moving throughout the museum as it supports and frames repair works as a permanent but ever-changing architectural feature. By repairing in public view, the project uncovers the behind-the-scenes stories of the museum, its collection and its imperial legacy, while celebrating architecture as an ongoing act.
