Indian Chawl Type Building Part 2 Project 2022 Chuxi Xiong University of Notre Dame | USA The Indian Chawl type architecture is a unique building type that connects each unit with passages around the open courtyard. This kind of passages is widely used in India as a need since outdoor space is usually cooler than indoors. They serve as an in-between space that connect the vibrant streets and the quiet sheltered interior. This semi-public space, serving as a gathering space for the community, allows neighbors and passers-by to conduct spontaneous conversation. However, the modernization of the construction type has gradually replaced this traditional use of in-between space in India. This chawl type building design is created to reintroduce this traditional transitional space. The comparative study between Indian Haveli and Chinese Tulou examines the form and use of di?erent corridors in di?erent culture. In both cases, the passages around the courtyard are wider than the balcony facing the street, as the courtyard and the passages are more of an intimate space for the community. In the chawl building design, the open courtyard, the passageway, the second-floor terrace and the roof terrace are created in distinct feature to provide a semi-public space for neighborhood activity.
