The Breadwinners Bakery

Part 2 Project 2024

The programme for this project derived from conversations with close male friends and family on the matter of men’s mental health. These discussions propelled a design for a safe space where men can discuss and express their masculinity in a healthy manner. Time and again in our discussions, references to a bakery emerged as a place reputed for being calm, comfortable, and life giving. On further investigation it was realised that baking has a proven record for benefiting those with mental health challenges. The historic and often dilapidated industrial architecture that surrounds the site becomes a metaphor for modern day masculinity; buildings are patched over, layered, and are in a poor state of disrepair. By remoulding the local typologies in the form of kiln structures, sawtooth roofs, and bridges, the design is both a practical and poetic response to the matter of men’s mental health in Liverpool’s 10 Streets district.
