Hackney Power Plant

Part 1 Project 2025

Hackney Power Plant (HPP) is the adaptive reuse of a semi-demolished, under-utilised former coal-fired power station which produced c.80 million tons of carbon during its 75 years of operation.

HPP aims to reverse the harm caused by decades of burning coal and does what it says on the tin. Millions of years ago, the coal burned, was trees and plants. ‘HPP’ turns a full circle back to the plants and is literally about the POWER OF THE PLANT.

This proposal will transform the former power station, into an education and research centre for the growing and manufacturing of sustainable carbon- sequestering construction materials, retail products and foods.

A key aim is zero-waste construction, starting from the adaptive reuse of the existing building, with minimal interference, the building being ultimately demountable with minimum waste, every element wherever possible being reused or recycled once the building reaches the end of its useful life.

The over-arching principal behind HPP is reversing the harm caused by the former coal-fired power station. It should be a pioneering exemplar project, genuinely addressing the climate emergency, with an authentic strategy around a circular economy, the whole building designed to be a ‘materials bank’ for the future.
