The Institute of Woodworking seeks to address two key issues within the construction industry; diminishing number of skilled workers and the urgent need for more housing. There is a reduced number of skilled carpenters within the industry due to an ageing workforce and lack of suitable local training facilities for the younger generation.

Utilising the airspace, above the railway infrastructure in Camden, the institute of woodworking is proposed to be built using only timber as the construction material. The aim of the institute is to explore ‘learning through making’ and generate interest in timber construction. The architectural program enables the students to be exposed to the whole timber construction process. Intertwined public routes allow views into the workshops and see the construction process first hand.

The Institute adopts train transport, connected to the West Coast main line, allowing timber to be delivered to the institute from UK forestry. Houses are built within the institute in parts and distributed across London and the West Coast main line.

Looking to the future, the institute would expand along the West Coast main line resulting in a network of institutes, housing zones, and other relevant programs, across the UK, interconnected through the railway infrastructure.
