The Biome Necropolis

Given the rapid decrease in cemetery spaces, increasing urban populations and the acute environmental toll of both burial and cremation within a city context, the Biome Necropolis is an alternative disposition method for the dead. The proposal celebrates the cycle of life and death, whereby the architecture is informed by an allegory between the dying body and re birth expressed through a productive and regenerative landscape memorialising the dead.

05 - Night section –During winter months Iceland is predominately in darkness, this drawing articulates the atmospheric qualities associated with darkness, geothermal activity and the process of promession.

07 - Subterranean Plan - Greenhouse conditions, are generated through geothermal activity and extreme weather conditions. This environment aids the germination of tree saplings that will populate the memorial forest which surrounds the Necropolis
08 - Short section - Processional paths traverse the Necropolis, and articulate moments that capture interdependencies between infrastructures found above and below the ground.
09 - Promession Chapel and Hotel of the Dead – An intricate architecture shelters a subterranean memorial garden from Iceland’s diverse and extreme weather conditions.
10 - Anatomical Axonometric - Showing the system of processional paths that traverse public, private and mixed use spaces.
