Erna Wiese: Upscaling Earth Part 1 Project 2020 Seraina Bernegger University of Liechtenstein | Liechtenstein The following design project is searching for possibilities to rebuild an area, located in a small village in western Austria. Taking into account the local history and development and the needs of the municipality with its inhabitants it reacts directly and indirectly to the most urgent environmental issues. Rammed earth, an ancient material that has only recently been reintroduced into the industrialized world, is used as a guideline. The design responds to the climate crisis by combining such an original, traditional raw material with the use of the local tradition of timber construction, as well as a reuse concept of materials from the previously existing construction on the site - an old steel pipe industry. Furthermore, the project explores concepts of communal living and the idea of shared spaces and uses. The final aim is to contribute to the reintroduction of rammed earth as a building material and to show how its architectonic and aesthetic qualities more than satisfy modern living requirements.
