In The Rivers: Crematorium and Columbarium, Horningsea Part 1 Project 2024 Sofía Villacé Carballo University of Greenwich | UK In The Rivers, takes the same name of Paul Celan’s poem where he marks a time beyond time; this project seeks to embody that poetic vision, creating new metaphors and images that offer fresh perspectives on our past, present and future circumstances. The project is located in the small village of Horningsea, northeast of Cambridge on the east bank of the River Cam. The site, isolated from the village centre, sits next to the village’s cemetery and crosses the river over to Milton, the village across. It aims to provide a meaningful space for the community of Horningsea to come together, grieve and reflect. The architecture of the project seeks to reflect the life cycle through its circular cycle of re- use and natural decay of the structure to the environment.Through the mix of bespoke personal elements with techniques like casting, charring timber and making rammed earth using materials like earth and timber sustainably sourced on site; the character of the crematorium is made visible in the architecture. The memories of the site and of the individuals resting there are immortalised; indelible in the paper that now lies within the rammed-earth walls of the crematorium and columbarium.
