Clayground Part 1 Project 2024 Charlotte Young University of Liverpool | UK Clayground is an institute for the development of clay based craft. Located in Liverpool's Fabric District, this project aims to create a new community hub for the area.The project re-uses two existing buildings and binds them together to create a single linear form. A new timber frame structure retains hollowed out buildings and holds up a sculptural roofscape hinting at the buildings new use. The form takes its inspiration from the undulating landscape of traditional ceramic production towns, with kilns protruding from a series of roofs.Internally the building contains a small-scale ceramics production facility, fostering local craftsmanship and creativity. A food hall with rotating vendors that will support small businesses and offer a place to work and meet. Additionally, smaller teaching workshops will be available for public use, encouraging the strong creative atmosphere that the district already has.An intimate public square sits at the centre of the building. In an area lacking in public amenity, this is envisaged to be an active heart, where workshops spill out and tables moved outside for communal dining on a sunny day.This central site will serve as a lively hub, encouraging collaboration among local businesses and strengthening community ties.
