A Proposal for a New Resort Complex

Part 1 Project 2025

This resort complex serves as an ode to Cuban architecture and is part of a larger redesign for the Malecon seafront areas in El Vedado, Cuba. The design aims to bring life back to the expansive, paved areas and decaying structures along its underutilized coast while ushering in a revival of the Spanish colonial coral stone architecture.

The proposal addresses the area's proclivity to humidity-caused degradation and major flooding during hurricane season by raising the current ground level by approximately four meters and developing a 30-meter setback, creating a marina and landscaped terrace. A seawall, located 50 meters from the coast, is also implemented to break up large waves and create a calmer beach area for guests.

Taking into account the heat and need for ventilation, the central resort structure features a series of courtyards connected to a grand stairwell. It follows the Cuban building code, allowing for a 5-meter setback of garden space that serves to transition from the urban fabric. The central structure hosts reception areas, back of house, and guest amenities on its ground and first floors while the surrounding buildings are exclusively residential.
