Shifting Landscapes

Part 1 Project 2025
Karleen Menes
University of East London London | UK
The project envisions a future where biodynamic farming coexists with the rehabilitation of the landscape, reconnecting a forgotten agricultural tradition. The project centres on both land and building recovery, restoring purpose to abandoned structures while nurturing ecological regeneration. New structures emerge from field itself, constructed using materials sourced from local spoil heaps and the surrounding environment, grounding architecture in its context.

Guided by a 100-year vision, the project invites community participation in a long-term process of renewal and stewardship. It positions architecture as a collaborator in ecological recovery and cultural continuity, rather than a force of disruption. The project imagines Allihies as a village where heritage is preserved, particularly the remains of the Coom Mine, while nature gradually reclaims the land. A circular approach to the building will support sustainable growth, ensuring that change enhances meaning rather than erasing identity.
