The Urban Chine Part 1 Project 2020 Charlotte Harvey Arts University Bournemouth | UK This project, 'The Urban Chine', combines research from three years study, in which the climate crisis and the natural world have been key influences, exploring how architecture can be actively beneficial to both human and planet through form and function. Taking precedent from natural forms such as Alvar Aalto’s timber experiments, vases and the natural world – namely Bournemouth’s seafront chines - an organic form entwined with nature is produced.The design employs sustainable energy such as photovoltaic panels, a ground source heat pump and recycled and recyclable materials, whilst considering the whole life cycle by designing the modular building to be dismantled at the end of its life.The concept is to create a replicable de-constructible building using minimal wet trades for construction, reducing the environmental impact of the whole project, yet being an inspiring and educational space to inhabit for the co-living community of tenants and workers.It is an ‘urban ripple’ with cascading positive effects into the locale, helping Bournemouth’s growth towards becoming a clean, green coastal town.
