Chatham Intra Town Hall Part 1 Project 2023 David Johnson University of Kent | UK The Chatham Intra Town Hall is an adaptive re-use project transforming a derelict 1960s car showroom and garage in the centre of the declining High Street between Chatham and Rochester into a multifunctional civic centre for the Medway area.Through local consultation and surveys, it was identified that the area lacked community cohesion, experienced limited access to mental/social wellness services, and had little provision for relaxation. The project seeks to fill these needs by providing the residents with facilities to conduct their civic lives; spaces that can be used for a variety of activities and events coordinated by the residents and the council. The people can run events that they want and need, taking ownership to improve themselves and the area. The design places emphasis on the circular economy and environmental benefit. The project preserves the existing structure with minimal, targeted demolition, and is extends it with renewable FSC certified timber. Discarded materials are redirected to their next lifecycle through remanufacture or direct re-use, doing everything possible to avoid the landfill. David Johnson Tutor(s)
