Centre for Social Reconciliation and Political Literacy Part 2 Project 2024 Damien Fernando City School of Architecture | Sri Lanka Sri Lanka's history is marked by conflicts like the 1983 anti-Tamil pogrom, the Elam war, and the 1971 insurgency, driven by political manipulation. In 2022, economic crisis triggered the 'Argalaya Movement,' uniting citizens across divides against mismanagement. This highlighted the need for sustained political literacy and informed citizenry. We propose an institution to enhance political awareness and a neutral platform fostering dialogue, reconciliation, and social cohesion through diverse expressions. This initiative aims to build a society that understands national complexities and works together for development, embodying unity in diversity. Thus, providing the need to design the following centre.‘The Living Canvas’A canvas is a medium used for forms of expression. A living canvas brings expressions into life. The architectural challenge of this project is to induce empathy and emotion through architecture. The concept of ‘A Living Canvas’ enables to use architecture as an instrument of communication and expression of social issues. The proposed museum journey uncovers the layers of our humanity, peeling each one away to reveal the essence within. It seeks to forge a deeper understanding and a profound empathy among us all. From the soil we arose and to the soil we return. Damien Fernando Tutor(s)
