Centro Comunale Di Venezia Part 1 Project 2024 Greta Giannoccaro University of Central Lancashire | UK Venice’s Centro Storico (historic centre) is an undoubtedly unique destination. The group of islands sheltered within a lagoon in the Adriatic Sea, off the coast of mainland Venice, attract hundreds of thousands of tourists every year. With sea levels rising, and the streets of the Centro Storico flooding every year - the six sestiere (districts) are sinking, and the population is shrinking. Venetians flee to the mainland due to the “disney-fication” of the Centro Storico, and the suffocating effects of over tourism. This project aims to reinstate the classic typology of the Italian piazza, within the residential district of Dorsoduro, and create space for locals to rediscover a community once lost due to rampant tourism. Locals will benefit from the library, medical consultation rooms to diagnose and prescribe holistic approaches to the ailments of the elderly, two arts and ceramics studios, six first floor studio flats and a sprawling communal garden and square. The repeated arch structure is a nod to the historical architecture of Venice, which is familiar to the Venetians and aims to encourage fluid movement through spaces. Greta Giannoccaro Tutor(s)
