De-construction Co-op

Part 1 Project 2025

Hidden underneath shiny new developments are the marks of destruction. The recent Glassworks complex, part of the Better Barnsley urban renewal program, entailed the demolition of several 1960s landmarks. The project challenges this tabula rasa approach, which disregards both historical heritage and resource use concerns. Even if unloved buildings cannot escape this fate, could society afford the cost of such squander?

On the ground of a disused Victorian warehouse for the Co-op groceries shop, which in turn sits on a former timber yard, the project houses a new De-construction Co-op for the deconstruction and re-processing of building materials. The Co-op will act as South Yorkshire's hub for circular construction practices, utilising this model of collaboration to practice an ‘architecture in reverse' that requires the participation of all parties in the building process. Drawing from Gordon Matta-Clark’s critical, precise cuts, careful deconstruction work is conceived as a public spectacle. By remaking and reframing the yard space, the proposal exposes its inner workings to the street, an openness that serves as both critique of current practices and invitation to participate in change.
