The proposed geology museum is part of the Cross-Channel UNESCO Global Geopark, an ongoing initiative that aims to connect the Kent Downs National Landscape in England with the Parc Naturel Regional des Caps et Marais d'Opale in France. The site is located on Samphire Hoe in Dover; a piece of reclaimed land made from chalk marl that was excavated during the construction of the Channel Tunnel.
The orientation, formation and spatial organisation of the building and its adjacent landscaping are inspired by the topography of the site. Evoking the shared geology on both sides of the channel, ribbons of parallel walls extend from the White Cliffs of Dover and the railway tracks in the west to the sea at the east. Organised as a curated loop around an existing sea water pool, the museum provides areas for exhibitions, research, education and community engagement. The defining walls are made from locally sourced rammed chalk. With darker soil aggregates at the bottom and lighter ones at the top, the vertical make-up of the walls echoes the subterranean strata. Creating an immersive journey that allows architecture, earth, and history to coexist harmoniously, the museum tells the story of deep geological time.
