Fostering Connections Part 1 Project 2024 Nabiha Warsame University of East London London | UK Based on an industrial site in Walthamstow set for demolition to make way for high-density housing and industry, the project's key objective is to demonstrate that the preservation and retrofitting of industrial buildings can benefit both communities and the environment. Blackhorse Lane Collective not only supports the existing makers' community and local residents but, with the introduction of urban pocket forests, also serves as an extension of the Walthamstow Wetlands. Over time, the growth of these forest will help create a vibrant, connected ecosystem.The design retains the majority of the existing 1930s shed structure, with the only large-scale additions being two central buildings: an auditorium with formal learning spaces above and a material bank. Both are constructed using engineered timber, with an ETFE façade providing a sustainable alternative to glass. Materials from the demolition, including bricks and earth, are repurposed in the design, featuring a rammed earth wall.Introducing new stakeholders has fostered a more diverse makers' community, with interior streets inviting public interaction. By challenging the necessity of demolishing buildings in our fight against climate change, this project highlights the significant role that industrial buildings can continue to play in our communities.
