La Via dell'Acqua, a transformative public space initiative in Quartucciu, Sardinia, ingeniously blends architecture and landscape design. Focused on revitalizing the Is Cungiaus River, the project corrects its course and employs natural barriers to manage water flow, mitigate floods, and enhance habitats. Beyond restoring the river, neglected areas turn into vibrant wildlife environments. This endeavour serves an educational and recreational purpose, guiding visitors along an enlightening path showcasing humanity's evolving relationship with nature. In response to Sardinia's Mediterranean climate and soaring temperatures, a climate shelter inspired by Italian grottos emerges. Crafted from waterproof concrete, it provides refuge from increasing heat and doubles as an educational hub. The underground structure, reminiscent of 2022 Spanish buildings, acts as a sanctuary during heatwaves, seamlessly transitioning into a water retention reservoir during intense rainfall. Carved messages within the shelter educate on climate change impacts, resilient against potential water damage. This micro-scale approach exemplifies tackling climate change issues. The shelter's concrete walls convey urgent messages, urging collective action and a harmonious future where people and the environment coexist. La Via dell'Acqua stands as a testament to confronting global challenges through innovative local solutions.
