This architectural investigation focuses on the sustainable reuse of materials from a historic knitted building and its attached barn in a new linear typological project in Eschen.

How can reusable materials and components from an old knitted building and its barn be efficiently used to realize a linear typology in an architectural project in Eschen while maintaining a clear tectonic and structural expression?

The knitted building at Kapfstrasse 2, built around 1793 and moved in 1861, with its barn built around 1821, offers a unique opportunity for conversion. The proximity of the design location within Eschen is crucial for minimizing CO2 emissions through shorter transport routes for the reused materials. The task of the semester was to measure the existing building, catalog its parts and rediscover them in a new design. The design process was assigned to the “Linear” building typology and focused on a form that complements the linear qualities of the chosen site - a path and parking lot that is used by hundreds of people every day and also serves as a jogging route for local residents.
