The Waste Odyssey Part 1 Project 2024 Gayendra Kuruppu City School of Architecture | Sri Lanka The project's primary objective is to revolutionize waste management and the upcycling ofplastic waste by redefining them as engaging activities with a strong emphasis on public involvement. It seeks to shift our perspective on waste, repositioning it as a valuable resource, all the while contributing to the revitalization of the polluted Muthurajawela wetlands. This transformation is achieved by enticing people to actively participate in the process, offering recreational amenities and constructing the facility itself using recycled plastic waste. This approach aims to guide individuals through a transformative journey, initially instilling a sense of concern about the problem and gradually leading them towards envisioning a regenerated future. The design of the project gracefully winds its way through the site, providing diverse paths for exploration - an odyssey - all converging into a central "waste" narrative. While the public engages with the project at an elevated level, the intricate upcycling processes take place below, establishing visual connections and a captivating interplay of different levels within the project. It combines contemporary recycling methods with community-focused design to close the gap between high and low tech solutions. Gayendra Kuruppu Tutor(s)
