Public Living Lounge: An Infrastructure for Social Inclusivity Part 2 Project 2024 Jonathan Chan Sheffield Hallam University | UK The existing site is located on the edge of the city wall relic that historically divided Marollen into two 'towns'. This wall once perpetuated a social and economic demarcation line, marking a division of social classes within Marollen. Over the years, this impressive terrain has been preserved as a public square. The project respectfully leverages this meaningful historical context to interpret the concept of a ‘Public Living Lounge,’ functioning as a streetscape intervention. It aims to create a collective extension for the homes within Marollen, founded on the principles of inclusive infrastructure by critically investigating the social needs for specific spaces in an urban setting, considering the diverse users, actors, and agents involved. The Public Living Lounge integrates overlapping programs of governance and usage, designed to care for and serve the diverse social classes and backgrounds of Marollen’s residents. It promotes cohesion and inclusivity in contemporary society while honouring its past. Moreover, the design of the facades considers an interactive relationship between both the interior and external environments. This approach enhances the building's visibility and engagement with the surrounding community, transforming it into a 'lighthouse' that acts as a landmark to activate the area after dark.
