Frame and Flow Part 1 Project 2025 Alexandra Szal London South Bank University | UK A space of constant evolution and growth within the urban narrative - Frame & Flow unites the robust time-honoured infrastructure of the canal docks at King’s Cross with next-generation cinematic technology, creating a future-proof confluence where industry and art intersect. The project explores the adaptive regeneration of central London’s only dry dock through the integration of a film club. Celebrating the site’s working character of craftmanship by inviting a new audience through film screenings, community events, and waterfront activity. As well as better serving the boating community, the site now caters to the growing film sector, providing an underwater stage, editing suites, cinema and collaborative shared spaces. Cinema-goers and visitors engage with both the boaters and filmmakers, creating moments of connection and exchange that enliven the site beyond its separate uses. The design celebrates this synergy with an exposed structural frame acting as a visible expression of the site’s past and present. The recycled steelwork celebrates the utilitarian aesthetic, while a modular approach ensures that the spaces can continue to evolve alongside future user needs. This balance of strength, adaptability, and industrial character reflects the dynamic spirit of the canal-side setting and its creative community.
