Centre for Building Skills Part 1 Project 2022 Daisy Charlotte Janet Foster University of Liverpool | UK The Anglesey barracks are part of the national slate museum in Wales; located near Llan- beris town they are situated on the side of electric mountain, once home to the Dinorwic and Vivian slate quarry and its quarrymen. The proposal aims to re define the significance of the barracks for what they were historically; a token of the rise and decline of the slate quarrying industry and the conditions faced by the workers. The new intervention integrates the barracks as a managed ruin and centre piece of the scheme with two key arrival points at either end; via railway and on foot, ultimately curating a linear main circulation space through the ruins, tied together via a circular topographical path. The design is intended to allow the site to evolve beyond a historical point in time, to a new centre for traditional building skills that can be applied to modern scenarios. The aim of the fabrication of the buildings is to showcase this; slate dry stone walling combined with CLT an timber construction in order to signify the relevance and opportunity that both traditional and new building skills can have simultaneously within modern construction.
