REnewable REgeneration Part 1 Project 2020 James Healey University of Reading | UK Open heathland is often overlooked in but it is in fact rarer than the rain forest - a habitat that receives significantly more attention regarding its conservation. In the UK we have only about 16% left of the area that existed in 1800. Heathlands support a rich number of flora and fauna which are now becoming increasingly endangered as heathlands disappear. Greenham Common - a nature reserve and SSSI in Southeast England which covers a large expanse of lowland heathland, ancient woodland, reedbeds, rivers, streams and beautiful rare wildlife -exemplifies this pressing concern through a result of lack of management which is causing the area and species it supports to suffer. My scheme addresses the need for conservation efforts on Greenham common by raising awareness through architectural design in order to conserve and protect its species for future generations. Housing for 10 families and interactive communal spaces will be woven with research laboratories intended to establish new efficient and sustainable management strategies for species found on Greenham common. This aims to reconnect people with nature and inspire a wider movement to protect our heathlands. James Healey Tutor(s)
