The Pestalozzi International Village Trust Part 2 Project 2006 Simon HintonFrances HegartyEmma TaylorNorman Renzo Cabrera Ruiz University of Liverpool | UK The Pestalozzi International Village Trust is a private educational institute located on a 175 acre estate in East Sussex. It is set in magnificent grounds and comprises educational, farming and support facilities, many of which are at the end of their economic life. The aim of PIVT is to educate academically able young people from disadvantaged backgrounds in developing countries. We adopted a phased approach, leaving suitable land undeveloped for farming, and included new facilities that can financially support an International Baccalaureate college. We chose traditional rural typologies to generate the scheme; the “English Country Manor” and the “Village”. The students were highly critical of the brief and decided to connect the village with the school thus enabling the villagers to use the Pestalozzi facilities. The scheme therefore builds a route, based upon English landscape tradition, hinging on the cricket field. This leads to a mixture of contrasting styles, like most Sussex villages, rather than a quasi-traditional approach or one embedded in some spurious phenomenological archaeology.
