Dient Creo Part 1 Project 2024 Lucy Gregson University of Huddersfield | UK In a society that favours a throw-away culture, we have set the precedent that ‘new is better’. Falling 8% lower than the global average, Barcelona currently only re-uses or recycles 43.3% of their production, with the majority ending up in landfill. As next to inherit the earth, there is an urgency for the youth of today to be better equipped with knowledge surrounding how to reduce the rate of climate change whilst actively implementing sustainable strategies. The ability for young people to use their voices to set about positive change is crucial in ensuring a pro-actively sustainable future. This project proposes the intervention of an Eco-Activism and Innovation Centre in the Barcelona neighbourhood of El Poblenou. It aims to re-educate the youth on how to implement sustainable strategies whilst also encouraging wider community engagement through specific public waste re-use and redistribution facilities, actively fostering a positive attitude towards environmentally responsible consumption. The intervention will both architecturally and functionally embody the ethos of sustainability and responsible consumption, aligning with themes such as Arup’s improved bio-loop model, upcycling and ethical resourcing. It acts as a beacon for an improved future within El Poblenou that both supports and is supported by Barcelona’s youth. Lucy Gregson Tutor(s)
