Choice

Part 1 Project 2023

On approach to the building, one is confronted with a choice of routes; the top path is a mostly direct route that carves its way through the building. It is a safe open place inspiring innovation as one moves over the surrounding rooftops. From this perspective, travellers see others squeezing through uncomfortably tight spaces below.

The bottom path is much darker. It delivers a traveller to a maze. There is no clear way to exit the building, it becomes apparent that there is a long excursion ahead. There are 'shortcuts' on the journey - confining and uncomfortable spaces which represent 'criminal' decisions. If one decides to take a shortcut, one can glimpse people on the path above looking down. Those on the upper route only see the lower travellers taking a shortcut; they only ever see a person committing a crime. The upper travellers are unable to observe how far those low down have come to take the shortcut, or what has led to that decision.

This project is a reflective and emotive experience that causes us to question our decision motivations and judgement of others.
