This multi-functional building combines a daycare for children under six with a soup kitchen and food bank, addressing social and nutritional needs within the community. The steeply sloping, triangular site, with a five- metre level change, helps to establish a clear division between the building’s two functions and allows for distinct, protected entrances.

The small, on-site food production facilities link the two programmes: produce grown on the terraces is harvested to supply the soup kitchen, providing free, nutritious meals to attending children and others in need.
Throughout this process the children engage directly with planting and harvesting, learning through hands-on participation about the cycle of food production and preparation. The building is not only a place of care but also of education and community support, encouraging social awareness, self- sufficiency, and shared responsibility.

The massing of the building creates a ‘city within a city’, with stepped roofs and terraces that offer outdoor spaces for growing crops. The use of mass timber, a prefabricated packed straw system, as well numerous passive strategies, the proposal has a significantly lower embodied and operational carbon compared to other more common construction techniques.
