The Loop Collective Part 1 Project 2024 Emily Kajdi London South Bank University | UK ‘The Loop Collective’ is a project created to address the pressing issue of fly-tipping in Hackney Wick, with a specific focus on discarded furniture. The journey began with a discovery of the charity ‘The Loop’, who specialise in collecting, upcycling and reselling discarded furniture. Inspired by this mission, a temporary folly was designed to raise awareness about their process and showcase the craftsmanship of the volunteers. The folly serves as a precursor to a permanent structure, designed to house ‘The Loop Collective’ — a group of local furniture and woodwork specialists who are dedicated to educating the community about upcycling and reuse. The permanent design provides workshops where the collective can teach the local community, from DIY skills to using machinery. Alongside the workshops is the collection tower, a structure designed to pick up items from boats and take them into the storage facility. The programme includes monthly furniture festivals, featuring flea markets and interactive workshops. Additionally, an annual furniture expo will showcase sustainable designs, present work done by the collective and bring in people from all over London. The Loop Collective aims to transform Hackney Wick by promoting sustainable living, fostering community skills and creating a cleaner area to live.
