Palermo’s Fortress of Inclusion Part 2 Project 2017 Jamie McGhee Cardiff University | UK In response to the influx of young refugees to the Sicilian capital of Palermo, this thesis envisions the transformation of the lost Castello-a-Mare into a centre for the progressive education of migrants and locals. The forgotten masses of this ancient citadel are realised with a new sense of permeability, emerging in line with a host of European cultural events and initiatives: the fortress of exclusion as a catalyst for inclusion.
