Space as a Cure Part 1 Project 2019 Panayiotis Ioakim Nottingham Trent University | UK My reading of Venice was influenced by the juxtaposition of the asymmetrical fragmentation of the land and the facades’ symmetrical pattern. Additionally, the idea of disorientation and interruption caused by the repetition of Venice's urban elements impacted my thinking. These interwoven and unique Venetian conditions prompted me to examine the inhabitants’ motivations, feelings and experience of the city. The purpose of the project is to bring symmetry and order into the site, while encouraging the integration of three key communities: local inhabitants, transient tourists and students. The architectural programme- library and gardens, allows to bring together these groups in order to minimise current negative perceptions. The project’s journey starts with the embodiment of the adverse feelings into a spatial experience, which is transformed through a selection of curated books and disciplines- philosophy and psychology. Space, volume and light are used to manipulate adverse feelings, encourage interaction between the groups and help developing a positive interaction. The roof gardens are designed to create new views of Venice and to provide a public space for dialogue. The space is used as a vehicle to ‘cure’ three communities and allowed them to inhabit the city in a peaceful manner. Panayiotis Ioakim Tutor(s)
