The Dolomites Centre for Climate Research Part 2 Project 2024 Darienne Whalen University of Portsmouth | UK The Dolomite Mountains provide one of the most clear examples of the tangible effects of climate change, evident in rapidly melting glaciers and increasingly frequent extreme weather events. The proposal establishes a new climate monitoring centre, providing a facility for scientists to research the local and global effects of the climate crisis.Located opposite Marmolada Mountain, the site of the Dolomites’ largest glacier, the centre provides a unique opportunity for scientists to live and study in close proximity to the glacier. This allows for direct observational monitoring and on-site research. Alongside its research facilities, the centre features educational spaces for the dissemination of expert knowledge through demonstrations, lectures, and conferences.The form of the proposed research centre takes inspiration from the process of ice melting. Analogue and digital explorations into the qualities of melting materials generated and developed the architectural form. Whilst glaciers are considered a natural thermometer and marker of global climate change, the proposed building seeks to perform as a marker of local seasonal changes. The appearance of the proposal changes in response to the seasons, retaining snow for additional insulation during winter, and allowing plant growth during summer. Darienne Whalen Tutor(s)
