Hisfirst observation about the heterotopia of time “that accumulates (time) indefinitely, for example the museums, the libraries… are heterotopias in which times never ceases to pile up.” In Western thought there is an obsession with the inescapableness of entropy. We attempt to immunise ourselves from it. This can be seen not only in the museum or library’s collections but I would argue that it can also be seen in the way we build. How do we truly make something last?This intervention is the investigation of such a question. In short, it consists of apermanent wrapping, a semi-permanent cladding structure and a transient envelope. The structure stands year long. It is wrapped once a year by the local community using a woven envelope from the marshes’ own wreaths. These wreaths exist similar to the structure in a cycle of death and rebirth. This envelope then dies off over time. It is only by the continual efforts of renewal year after year that the structure remains beautiful. Neil O'Brien Tutor(s)
