Vernacular Process: Uniting Tradition with Innovation as a Solution for the Future of Architecture Part 1 Dissertation 2023 Weronika Brzozowska Falmouth University Falmouth | UK This dissertation is focused on the concept of vernacular architecture, as both a process and a typology, having consideration of changing social, economic and environmental factors. It analyzes existing definitions and approaches, proposing a formula to adapt vernacular architecture in the context of climate change, population growth, resource scarcity and globalisation. The work also critiques the homogenisation of contemporary design and its disregard for the traditional crafts, highlighting the importance of cultural and architecture identity. The case studies featuring the work of Anupama Kundoo, Joe Addo, and Diébédo Francis Kéré exemplify the integration of vernacular processes in contemporary architecture.This study endeavours to reveal a paradigmatic shift in architectural thinking, using vernacular architecture as a construct for inspiring sustainable design approaches. It explores the opportunity for the knowledge of traditional practices and local materials to embrace innovation, to create a healthy relationship between the built environment and the natural world.
