Fish Island Cutlery Factory

Part 2 Project 2023

The project proposes a cutlery factory, aluminium recycling area, exhibition and restaurant. The programme is based on ideas of the circular economy where aluminium is recycled into billets which are then extruded or rolled into shape for the process of cutlery manufacture. This cutlery is then used within the restaurant. The used cutlery can be melted back down into billets and used again for cutlery design and further manufacturing.

Structurally, the project can be separated into two parts: the main proposed structure and an existing building on site. The main proposed structure is an aluminium Bosch T-Section frame as the primary structure which uses bolted T-Section connections. The whole construction is broken down into separate “chunks,” that can either be fabricated on or off site and constructed using minimal energy. The entire super structure can also be disassembled without cutting or traditional demolition techniques. The existing building on site uses the principles of Urban Mining and low embodied carbon by using a cellulose insulation system, using recycled cellulose, which is mainly shredded newspaper to insulate the building in a deep retrofit.
