Traversing Curiosity Part 1 Project 2024 Jie Shan Wong University of Malaya | Malaysia “How does a library make you ask questions?”The proposed library behaves as an architecture that takes advantage of humans’ instinctual sense of curiosity to bring people back to the declining Klang town, that has been facing dilapidation and losing its past significance as one of the oldest towns in Malaysia over the years.The journey of the library is guided by one question followed by another. As visitors traverse through layers of curiosity, the library constantly challenges visitors to question the conventional library model.The design is to be a playful game of ‘hide & seek’ with people coming from the adjacent pre-WWII shophouses, schools, etc. This then shapes the form, which extends towards existing human traffic. The strong planar form directs movements, whilst the raw concrete finishes set against various green landscape as a humble backdrop. Altogether, creating an explorative and transient experience that invites visits and revisits.“What is a library?”The finale of the journey leads to an observatory. It is a reminder for all that ‘curiosity’ might be the solution to save the town - as the rest of the town, is in fact, the living library waiting to be explored.
