The Foundry

Part 1 Project 2024

This project is for a foundry dedicated to the casting of climate emergency bells. Bells are recognised in all cultures as a symbol for celebration, mourning and as a warning. The bells cast here will be distributed and tolled to mark the impacts of climate change. Inspired by the Bio-Diversity Bell dedicated to the great Robert Hooke who was one of the first to deduce and write about the possibility of species becoming extinct due to environmental changes. The facility merges sustainable metal casting and three dimensional printing technologies with traditional Russian bell casting art. It is designed as an innovative model which recycles the forthcoming surplus of redundant petrol and diesel vehicles. The main facades of the building are constructed from cast glass and metal cells, based on scans of the neighbouring cliff face. The metal cells form the structural framework of the building whilst also housing the foundry’s machinery and the storage of the bells prior to distribution.
