An Architecture of Woodland: Proposal for a New Forestry Centre

Part 1 Project 2024

My project explores the architectural possibilities that arise within the constraints of the current state of forestry in the UK, and explores the potential for new architectural modalities derived from the propagation of a new woodland plantation on the outskirts of Thame, a historic market town in Oxfordshire.

Initially buildings are constructed utilising a variety of species existing within the common UK Timber supply. As the Woodland grows over the decades, the buildings are adapted and expanded through the use of a new local supply of both broadleaf and coniferous species. At it’s heart the project seeks to contend with the challenges of sustainability by adopting a regenerative approach to material production in the context of building development. The project programme seeks to create a new processing centre for this local resource - providing new industry for the town. In this way it exists as a prototype for architectural development in alignment with the growth of new productive woodlands.
