The Stones of Dunmore

Part 2 Project 2024

'The Stones of Dunmore' is the collective term for a series of ruins, scattered across the old Dunmore Park Estate in Stirlingshire. They have stood far longer than their original builders, and each have a story to tell. They are the focal point of this thesis, a hand-drawn study of the permanent and impermanent, and our brief encounter with the material of deep time.

Central Scotland still bleeds from the wounds of lost industry, as our unique resources were traded for cheaper overseas alternatives. Global imports of ephemeral materials have cost us greatly in our current climatic challenges and the decline of our architectural craft. Carefully re-inhabiting the stones, the thesis aims to re-establish a hub for local craftsmanship, pave the way for a circular material economy, and champion the retrofit and reuse of our built heritage in Scotland. Dunmore Park will be a catalyst for change by selling this idea of reclamation: salvaging the ruins, materials, and skills of the past.
