Figures within a Framework

Part 2 Project 2024

Figures within a Framework is an adaptive reuse project in which a former high street department store is reimagined as a family hub and cultural centre.

The thesis focusses on a tolerant approach to reuse. Tolerance in design requires careful assessment of an existing condition to maximise the value of current systems – formal, structural, programmatic and social - as well as supporting sustainable expansion and adaptation of the site for future use.

The project seeks to counter the consumer-driven model of the high street through the provision of free resources which can support the expansion of Commons within the city. The spaces are designed to accommodate family support services to meet the demands of the growing young population and increasing cost-of-living crises faced in the borough. A new cultural programme encourages community engagement at the heart of the high street, whilst also providing alternative means of funding.

The formal language of the proposals is informed by analytical studies of the existing site. Interventions aim to build-upon and enhance existing qualities of the building, whilst taking into consideration the socio-economic context to create an architecture that is tolerant of both the existing infrastructure and local community needs.
