Stage-D-isruption

Part 2 Project 2025

My thesis explores anti-urbanism and unitary urbanism that challenges conventional planning by embracing temporary, flexible uses of space. Inspired by the Situationist International (SI) and Joan Littlewood, it promotes a city shaped by protest, and public participation rather than capitalist control. Littlewood’s Fun Palace, designed with Cedric Price, envisioned a flexible, user-led environment, a vision echoed in this proposal for Birmingham’s Smithfield site.

Currently awaiting redevelopment, Smithfield’s cleared land offers an opportunity for experimental intervention from 2025–2035. I propose temporary structures attached to existing buildings, using found materials and inspired by protest design and détournement to question who controls space. These structures are not fixed; they act as stages for performance, and improvisation, whereby spaces are continually reshaped by their users.

Bernard Tschumi’s Parc de la Villette also informs the project. Like his follies, the design resists singular meaning, encouraging multiple interpretations. Rather than build upwards, this proposal spreads horizontally, preserving open, public ground.

This thesis calls for an architecture that is open-ended and participatory. It values impermanence and adaptability, maintaining the identity of the market while fostering inclusive regeneration. Ultimately, it positions Smithfield as a living, changing space for collective expression and public agency.
