Fisherman’s Deck - Made in Fleetwood Part 1 Project 2025 Wafiyah Lawan University of Central Lancashire | UK Fleetwood, a coastal town in Lancashire, carries the weight of time in its urban fabric, transforming from a bustling fishing port during the Victorian era to a more tranquil seaside community. It is home to the iconic lighthouses, the North Euston Hotel, and remnants of old docks that hint at its celebrated past. The experience of making an object far outweighs buying a ready-made piece; making it yourself allows you to add a touch of you, whether perfect or imperfect. My artefact, a set of boat-shaped wooden miniatures, honours the historic fishing smacks, the Harriet and the Judy, not through exact imitation but through a personal and interpretive gaze. This sentiment in making became the heart of my design. For this project, I aimed to design a makerspace where history is remembered through an environment that encourages craftsmanship, memory, and connection.Drawing from Fleetwood’s natural surroundings and the quiet power of creating something by hand, the design is considered with and for Fleetwood, establishing a new space that celebrates its fishing industry, connects public and private, residential and commercial, and feels placed in Fleetwood’s identity yet introduces something new.
