The Grenfell Tragedy, a horrific consequence of systemic failures within the UK building industry, began with a fire that tragically claimed 72 lives. The ensuing inquest left profound questions: How do we truly honour the lost, remember their lives, and what becomes of the tower itself?

This project, "Remembrance and Recovery," reimagines the role of design following such collective tragedy. It seeks to create a place for the acknowledgement and reappraisal of trauma and minority experiences—a pathway to recovery. More than just structures, it envisions therapeutic spaces fostering agency and empowerment.

Conceived as a new form of social and healing infrastructure, home to resilient communities, "Remembrance and Recovery" proposes a responsive condition. It seamlessly integrates trauma-informed housing with a therapeutic spatialization of healing modalities like EMDR, fundamentally reconceptualising the relationship between trauma and recovery.

Understanding the individual's profound connection to a tragedy's remnants, architecture here serves as a powerful spatial language. It empowers vulnerable groups to articulate their experiences and shape their narratives. The design's core aim is to create accessible, welcoming spaces, built upon prioritising trauma-informed principles.
