Reactivating the Old Industrial Zone of Pancevo (Serbia): Architectural excess as a catalyst for urban revitalisation

Part 2 Project 2025

The concept of the Art Center is based on the revitalization of a former industrial zone in Pančevo (Serbia), through the adaptive reuse of abandoned grain silos on the banks of the Tamiš River. The project explores architecture as a catalyst for artistic creation and public dialogue, employing strategies derived from various artistic disciplines — painting, performance, photography, film and music — and translating them into architectural methods of spatial articulation. The central idea of the project is the application of excess as a spatial and programmatic principle: the excessive, the deformed, the unpredictable. The Art Center is envisioned as an open, flexible, and transformable form — one that offers no fixed answers but invites continuous reinterpretation and adaptation. Architecture is not conceived as a finished product, but as a framework that artists themselves can modify, expand, and use as an extension of their own creative processes. Through techniques of deconstruction, layering, and transformation, the building transcends conventional typologies of cultural institutions. The aim is not merely to provide infrastructure for art, but to create an emotionally and intellectually charged space that fosters artistic development and strengthens the cultural identity of the city.
