Timeless Social Hub Part 1 Project 2019 Arturas Calyj University College Cork | Ireland South Parish is an 18th Century architectural conservation area in Cork which has been modernised unsustainably with the historical streets becoming congested with traffic and car parks which block access. Initially, the project proposes a connecting cultural trail through the centre of the urban blocks, and new massing interventions to bring the site to its maximum density. The trail begins with a proposed footbridge from the city centre, and winds through newly created courtyards and past historical structures which will act as attractors to the site, alongside new creative and cultural functions.The project continues with the development of the interior of one of the blocks, with an aim to promote a 24H lifestyle most popular with students and young professionals. It offers a mixed-use development of a co-working space, pod hotel, underground conference centre and nightclub. The separate functions revolve around a central glass and steel circulation core which connects them vertically and acts as a landmark, reflective in the day and glowing in the night. The sky bridges, cantilevers and voids create a surreal new public space in the city, while the structural expressionism in glass and steel aims to create a powerful contrast with the historical facades.
