To create a legacy and a sense of monumentality for this historic Southern California LGBTQ+ neighborhood, this project incorporates the characteristics of permanency and inclusivity exemplified by incorporating long-lasting, functional structures with sustainability principles reinforced by the engaging surrounding spaces of greenery. Currently, Hillcrest is divided into two sites by a horizontal wall of asphalt. Major streets surround the sites creating an island. To bring about unity and encourage cultural interactions, a promenade was created by removing vehicular traffic. The formation of Eco streets extending from the site to the canyons and Balboa Park promote these interactions. A coalescence of mix-use buildings with a central courtyard act as a unified structure symbolizing the consolidation of the community. To create a source of pride, grand steps situated near "Coalescence Park" allow formal entry into the large elevated central courtyard, the heart of the LGBTQ+ community. The curvilinear staircase and undulating walkways that cantilever over the cavernous floral courtyard act as arteries. Feelings of place and identity will be generated by the Coalescence and the cultural ties between the LGBTQ+ community and the city of San Diego will be strengthened leading to inclusivity and acceptance.
