NS Savannah 2030

In the year 2030 the UN has been adaptively reusing naval ships for a range of environmental purposes for several years. Recently the crew aboard the NS Savannah have decided to create an independent anarchist community on board their ship. This ship captures and processes ocean plastic for further use. I have created a novel generative design algorithm to help inform my design for this massive floor plan. This program is a proof of concept for further generative design algorithms.

The structural interventions to the original ship are aided by topological optimisation to reduce their material cost, and the processing plants layout is augmented by an internal system of cranes and movable prefabricated walls. The ship's systems are all-electric, and as such a large battery array is installed in the hold of the ship to run all the traditional ship systems as well as the full-time community that lives on board and the specialised recycling systems.

The generative design algorithm was also trying to investigate what social spatial relationships can be expressed and improved with generative design. This attempt was moderately successful for such an ambitious project. The outcomes of which include the living and communal areas on board.
